ago already 29 years, in 1994, was held for the first time International Reggae Day in Jamaica and ever since each 1 of July is destined to celebrate this musical rhythm that the small island nestled in the center of the Caribbean Sea gave the world.
The promoter of this celebration was Andrea Davis, cultural curator, producer and recognized on the island as a defender of reggae music, who was inspired by a speech by Winnie Mandela, social worker, politician and wife of the South African leader Nelson Mandela, who on a visit to Jamaica in 1992 praised the ability of reggae music to “give breath, inspire and unite” the people of South Africa in their fight against apartheid, regime that at that time was in its final stage.
The relevance of this style is demonstrated not only in its declaration of Intangible Heritage of Humanity by Unesco in the year 2018, but also as music that serves as a vehicle for social demands, inequality and hope for a better world and in turn was the main vehicle that allowed the spread of the Rastafari faith throughout the world.
as antecedent, the date coincides with the anniversary of the death of Dennis Brown, the “Prince of Reggae”, who coincidentally died on 1 July 1999.
