A series of events and activities throughout the island announced the Minister of Culture, Gender, years since it was officially declared by the Island Government, Olivia Grange, on the occasion of the commemoration of 64 anniversary of independence of Jamaica, under the motto “United in celebrating Resilience”.
The Government authority commented that this year's motto is a reflection of the identity of the people of this Caribbean island: “Embodies strength, the determination and unity that have defined the Jamaican spirit throughout our history and, most recently, facing the challenges posed by Hurricane Melissa. Many of our communities suffered serious disruptions, destruction and even losses; but nevertheless, as we have done repeatedly, Jamaicans faced adversity with courage and with the unwavering conviction that this too shall pass”.
Grange pointed out that these celebrations represent more than just commemorative events., but rather an opportunity for Jamaicans to celebrate their shared resilience as they look confidently to the future.
Among the most notable events is the Jamaica Song Contest Festival (Jamaica Festival Song Competition), which this year celebrates its 60th anniversary. This popular annual competition is now underway, with a group of finalists competing to reach the coveted first place.
Grange noted that the competition has endured over time because it unites Jamaicans through music and highlights the creative excellence of the nation..
“The Jamaica Song Contest Festival is one of our nation's most cherished cultural activities.. During 60 years, has promoted patriotism, creativity and national pride, providing a platform for generations of Jamaican artists to celebrate our identity through music”, Grange stated..

Two weeks of activities
Activities at the end of July will include the weekly televised game show “Jamaica Gospel Star”, the contest results gala “Jamaica Festival Song”, the National Emancipation and Independence Thanksgiving Service at Olson Memorial Church of God in St.. Andrew the 26 july 1st, and the Seville Emancipation Jubilee at Seville Heritage Park in St. Ann the 31 july 1st.
The celebrations will continue with the “Independence Village” (Independence Village), that will transform the National Stadium in Kingston into the main center of activities to commemorate the Independence of Jamaica.
Of the 1 al 6 of August, The six-night program will include Miss Jamaica Festival Queen coronation ceremony (1 of August), the grand final of Jamaica Gospel Star (2 of August), the show Mello-Go-Roun’ (3 of August), the event Independence Soul Tuesday —presented by Shukkle Bus and produced by Romeich Entertainment— (4 of August), the bingo night, dominoes and games (5 of August), to culminate with the Grand Independence Gala at the National Stadium on 6 of August, event that can also be followed on a giant screen in the “Independence Village”.

It should be noted that after a long negotiation, Jamaica gained its independence from the United Kingdom on 6 August 1962, after putting an end to more than 300 years of british rule. That day in Jamaica the green flag was raised for the first time, yellow and black. These celebrations also coincide with Emancipation Day which is celebrated every 1 August on the island to commemorate the end of slavery achieved in its entirety in the year 1838.
