Year 2025 not only marked the 10th anniversary of Bunna Cafeteria, that project that has become a vibrant cultural syncretism between coffee, reggae, Ethiopian culture and the Rastafari faith.
This year we have an even bigger milestone: the culmination of a decades-long dream, the pilgrimage to Ethiopia that closes a deep circle of faith and purpose.
In the heart of Bunna (that means “café” in Amharic, the language of ethiopia) it is Jorge Espinoza Ortega, Known to many as Brother Jordan, lately like Bunna, but for me it's just “he Coke”. He personifies Bunna culture, fruit of a vital journey that began in Puente Alto with reggae and the Rasta faith.
From his beginnings in youth, in the cradle of a group of brothers who organized themselves in Puente Alto as “Mission”, holding multiple events, toccatas, walks and many other things, and then became the OMPUR (Organization Mission for Progress and Rastafari Unity) —remembered for her fundraising work for the Royal Visit of 2006, whose history we will soon celebrate regarding its 20 years-, the path of “Coke” has spread throughout Chile and the world.
With his current residence in Antofagasta, interspersing trips to La Serena and Hualaihué, on the Carretera Austral, with the Cajón del Maipo as the home of Bunna par excellence, They are part of the route that this time reaches that spiritual destination that many of us long for.: Addis Abeba.
The trip to Ethiopia is more than a visit; It is the materialization of a conviction that was born in childhood, as Jorge Espinoza expresses it excitedly:
“There are many emotions. From a very young age, when I met the Rastafari faith, I listened and read 'Ethiopia', ‘Cus’, ‘Abyssinia’. I was amazed at the reggae music mentioning Ethiopia, United Africa, appointing His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, Amharic and all that tremendous and powerful energy“.
“I had just 12 years and, still being a child, I felt tremendous spirituality with Rasta. As the years went by I embraced faith, They were beautiful years with my beloved brothers from 'Mission', and today they take us to the promised land with Bunna Café Chile. We dedicate this pilgrimage with much love to our children, family and siblings”.
This pilgrimage not only celebrates the 10 years of Bunna —whose anniversary we celebrated last May at the event “Bunna 10 years, the gala”— but represents the entire Rasta community and Bunna's family, on the journey through our “Holy Land”, the land of lion of judah.
“The trip to Ethiopia represents the spirit of getting ahead, to fight for dreams and to continue with the Bunna project with more strength and experience to capture it the moment we return. This powerful and nourishing experience is for everyone: for my beloved sons and daughters Kidan, Print, Matias Ahmed, Caleb André and Coni; for my parents, my brother Sebastián and his son Braulio; and for that unbreakable friendship with the Rastas of Puente Alto”.
“We leave Chile with the flag verde, yellow and red more alive than ever, with the promise that the spirit of Ethiopia will inspire every cup of Bunna Café. From Addis Ababa we send tremendous greetings and love to the community in Chile! Bunna keep going!”
