British roots reggae lost one of its renowned figures. Errol “Barkwood” Brown, founding member and vocalist of the band Black Roots, passed away unexpectedly last 28 from July to 75 ago.
The news came from the band itself through their social networks in which they fired the former vocalist..
“We will miss you, but we will never forget you, especially because your legacy lives on in music. Our most sincere condolences to the family. This news has been devastating for all of us who knew him.; rest in peace“, expressed the group.
The voice behind the hymns
Errol Brown was the lead vocalist on songs that became classics like “The Father”, “Survival” or “War”, part of a discography that Black Roots built from Bristol, England, where he was born at the end of the years 70 as a direct expression of the Jamaican diaspora in the United Kingdom.
They quickly carved out a place for themselves in British roots reggae., with music that transmitted a Rastafar message, addressed social and political issues head-on, and he did it with a forceful sound that still resonates.
His career with Black Roots spanned from 1979 until 2021, with more than four decades carrying a message that combines Rastafarian spirituality, social consciousness and pure roots.
Errol joins other founding members of Black Roots who have already departed, as Derrick King in low, Trevor Seivwright on drums and vocalist Charles Bryan, also know as Delroy Ogilvie.
