Rastafari community prepares activities to celebrate Empress Menen's day

like every year, the next 3 of April the birth of the empress of Ethiopia is commemorated Menen Asfaw I, which is why the Rastafari community is preparing activities in different cities of the country such as Talca, Santiago and Valparaiso.

In Talca the appointment is Saturday 4 of April in Kawen Space where this important date will be commemorated with a cultural day, which invites people to gather around Nyahbinghi singing and various artistic expressions. further, will feature a discussion that seeks to reflect on the legacy of African women in these times.

The controls will be in charge of Unity Sound System, who will be amplifying the activity with guest artists.

Commemoration in Santiago

In Santiago it will be held on Sunday 5 April Sound System Cultural Vol.3 edición “Empress Menen Day” in Popular Garden Observatory to the South, La Pintana, a day that seeks to recognize the importance of the empress as mother of Rastafari culture. The event will have various presentations, selectors, soundsystem y mc’s.

USA, Harold Dub y Judah Bless They are the guest selectors, while on the microphone they will be Criss Dumüy, Sistah Lore, Chinitafari, Sister Angela, Muffin Seif & Ketteman Fyah y Polo Ises.

Presentations will also be held at the event “Contributions of Rastafari women to decolonization” by Ras Pancho Tafari, Y "Empress Goes" by the Empress Menen Foundation. The amplification will be in the hands of Solar Sound System.

The family activity will be free, alcohol and garbage free, from 14:00 horas a Av. Observatory 1900.

Along with these instances, a third activity is being planned for mid-April in the city of Valparaíso, continuing the celebration of this fundamental milestone for Rastafari culture.

Who was Empress Menen??

Menen Asfaw nation the 3 April 1891 -although some sources mention the year 1889- in the disappeared province of Wolo, in northern Ethiopia, under the name of Walatta Giorgis.

She was the empress consort of Haile Selassie I crowned alongside him the 2 November 1930 in a ceremony to which several world leaders of the time were invited.

The Empress played a fundamental role in the promotion of Ethiopian women, She was the Patron of the Ethiopian Red Cross and the Ethiopian Women's Charitable Organization.

Likewise, founded the Empress Menen School for Girls in Addis Ababa, the first school and boarding school for girls, among other important tasks carried out during his life.
