El reggae se ha caracterizado desde sus orígenes por ser un vehículo para expresar diversas luchas sociales como la injusticia, el racismo, la desigualdad y la violencia, así como también fue y sigue siendo un importante medio para masificar el Rastafarismo en el mundo.
De todos modos en su desarrollo también ha adoptado el mensaje del amor en su amplia concepción, y por supuesto también desde el punto de vista romántico.
